MASERU – The loaded goods transporting truck lost control earlier this morning at Maseru Border Post and caused mayhem as it ran over the vendors selling across the bridge at South Africa side killing four people.
This is according to the Head of the Provincial (Free State) Communication Office of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Brigadier Motants’i Makhele.
He said four people died on the scene while many were injured and had been rushed to the nearby hospitals.
Brigadier Makhele could not be drawn to comment how many people were injured and what the cause of the accident was. He said the driver of the truck got out of the car while in motion and got injured in the process and was also rushed to the hospital.
It is also unclear at this stage how many Basotho are involved in this accident.
Brigadier Makhele said more details will be provided after a report of the investigators.
On behalf of the government, the Minister of Home Affairs, Local Government and Chieftainship and Police Hon. Lebona Lephema condoled with the deceased families urging motorists to exercise caution.
“We want to send our deepest condolences to those who have lost their lives in this accident,” he said.
The accident had caused the slow movement of the cars and the travellers while the scene was under investigations.
One of the border users, ‘Malits’oanelo Nchabane who was travelling to Welkom said they had to wait for two hours in the Lesotho side while the scene was cleared.
She said the accident has caused them pain as the travellers.
