Lioli Football Club, have been officially crowned champions in a victorious highpoint to the 2024/25 Vodacom Premier League (VPL) season.

The celebrated club secured the title after a tense 0-0 draw against LCS at PTC Ground — a result that gave them the single point they needed to seal the championship.

With 68 points now in the bag, Lioli have placed themselves beyond the reach of their closest challengers, Matlama FC, who currently sit second with 64 points. Even with one game remaining for both sides, Matlama can only reach a maximum of 67 points, leaving Lioli the clear, rightful champions.

One of Lioli’s fans, Francis Makepe, congratulated the team for their success and encourages the team to participate in the continental championship and be recognised by CAF.

This victory marks Lioli’s second consecutive VPL title and continues their rich legacy in Lesotho football.

The club last accomplished this back-to-back feat during the 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons under coach Mosholi Mokhothu.

Now, almost a decade later, they have replicated the achievement under the capable leadership of head coach Motheo Mohapi, who has guided the team with confidence and tactical skill.

Lioli’s road to glory has been marked by consistency, resilience, and outstanding performances across the season. Their defensive strength was once again on full display in Sunday’s goalless draw, showcasing the discipline and determination that have become the hallmarks of Mohapi’s coaching philosophy.

Throughout the campaign, Lioli remained a step ahead of the competition, collecting crucial points in both home and away matches and capitalising on key moments in tight fixtures. Their title win is not just a statistical accomplishment but a testament to the team’s cohesion, depth, and relentless pursuit of excellence.

Mohapi says in their next match against LUFC supporters they will be given the chance to choose 11 players. The nomination will closed on Thursday at 9am.

The Premier League Management Committee (PLMC), together with league sponsors Vodacom Lesotho, will officially present the coveted league trophy to the new champions this coming weekend. The grand presentation will take place at DIFA Maputsoe, where Lioli will host Limkokwing University FC in their final fixture of the season.

This celebration will not only mark the end of a successful campaign but also give Lioli fans — the heart and soul of the club — a moment to revel in their team’s success. Supporters are expected to turn out in large numbers to witness the trophy handover and celebrate a season to remember.

While Lioli enjoy their moment at the top, the mood is different for Mzamane FC (14 points) and ACE Maseru (15 points), both of whom have been relegated to the A Division.

Their struggles throughout the season have culminated in demotion, and they now face the challenge of regrouping and rebuilding for a potential return to the VPL in the future.

Mohapi’s ability to manage high-pressure situations, rotate his squad effectively, and instill a winning mentality have proven invaluable. He now joins the pantheon of successful former Lioli coaches and continues to build a legacy that could rival the great Mosholi Mokhothu.

As the curtain begins to fall on the 2024/25 season, Lioli’s focus will soon shift to preparing for the next chapter. With continental competitions likely on the distance and the challenge of defending their title yet again, the champions will need to maintain their high standards and perhaps even strengthen their squad in the off-season.
