Econet Telecom Lesotho (ETL) reaffirmed its strong commitment to supporting the growth of rugby in the country through a significant sponsorship partnership with the Federation of Lesotho Rugby (FLR).

In a recent announcement, Puleng ‘Mathabo Masoabi from Econet highlighted that the company’s sponsorship extends from grassroots levels to the league level, with a particular focus on schools and young players. She emphasised that rugby is a sport that requires dedication, patience, and trust, qualities that both Econet and FLR are committed to nurturing in the future stars of Lesotho rugby.

Econet’s sponsorship of Lesotho rugby has grown significantly over the years. Last year, the company contributed M170,000.00 towards the development of the sport. However, this year the investment has more than doubled, with a generous M400,000.00 allocated to cover the costs of various initiatives, including supporting players, coaches, and the broader rugby community. Masoabi confirms that Econet enters into new contracts each year, reinforcing the company’s long-term commitment to rugby in Lesotho.

The history of Econet’s sponsorship began with a modest contribution of M50,000.00, which gradually increased over the years. Contributions have steadily grown, reaching M100,000.00, M120,000.00, M150,000.00, M170,000.00, and now M400,000.00 for the current year. This progression illustrates Econet’s growing confidence in the potential of rugby in Lesotho and its desire to make a substantial impact on the sport’s development at all levels.

Director of FLR Mahlomola Letsie, also shared exciting news for the rugby community. On March 28, 2025, FLR will hold an awards ceremony to recognise the hard work and dedication of players and media personnel. The awards will include categories such as “Most Improved Player” and “Player of the Year,” the latter of which will be voted on by fellow players. This ceremony will be an important occasion to celebrate the achievements and progress within Lesotho rugby.

Through these awards, they want to motivate players and acknowledge their contributions to the game. It is not just about competition but about recognising the effort and hard work that go into growing the sport.

Litšitso Motšeremeli, a key figure in Lesotho rugby, also underscores the sport’s inclusivity. Rugby, he hightlighted, is for everyone, including individuals with disabilities. The sport provides an opportunity for all to engage, excel, and become part of a community united by their love of the game. His commitment to inclusivity reflected the broader mission of the FLR and Econet to ensure rugby is accessible to all Basotho, regardless of background or ability.

One of the notable achievements of the Federation of Lesotho Rugby has been the successful development of players who have gone on to compete at the international level, including representing Lesotho in South Africa and England. This international exposure is a testament to the growing standards of the game in Lesotho, and it serves as inspiration for younger players aspiring to reach similar heights.

Econet’s ongoing investment in rugby, in partnership with the Federation of Lesotho Rugby, promises to be a cornerstone of the sport’s future in the country. Through financial support, player development, and recognition of achievements, the partnership is set to elevate Lesotho rugby to new heights both locally and on the international stage.
