MAFETENG

In a district once torn apart by conflict and violence, the Makaota Ladies Association, founded in 2018, emerges as a beacon of hope and resilience. This dynamic women’s group offers spiritual support, healing, and practical assistance to a community deeply scarred by crime. With unwavering faith and purpose, these women are determined to restore peace and stability in Mafeteng.

Among the leaders of this remarkable group is Mathabo Limakatso Chaoana, a proud Lekaota from Thaba Ts’oeu and the group’s General Secretary. Mathabo’s life has been shaped by her Christian faith, her family, and a fierce dedication to service. Born and raised in Mafeteng, she draws strength and guidance from her relationship with God, often engaging in intercessory prayer for her nation.

“I am a God-fearing woman, and my heart is in prayer for the stability and peace of Lesotho,” she shares. Married to a wonderful man from Quthing and a mother of three, two daughters and a son, Mathabo balances her family life with her commitment to Makaota Ladies.

The Makaota Ladies Association was officially registered with the Law Office of Lesotho in January 2024, marking a new chapter in their mission to bring lasting change. Their efforts are more than just a mission; they are a calling, deeply rooted in faith and driven by love for their community.

The group collaborates with local security forces to address the effects of crime and provides support to families affected by violence. “We believe in the power of prayer,” says Mathabo, “and we draw from two key scriptures: 2 Chronicles 7:14 and Luke 1:37, which remind us that with God, nothing is impossible, and if we humble ourselves and seek His face, He will heal our land.”

Makaota Ladies operates with three fundamental objectives, each designed to uplift the community and restore hope. Inspired by the four areas of Mafeteng, which are, Makaota, Mathula, Makena, and Liamoha the group visits these places to offer prayer and assist with their needs.

They host workshops and awareness-raising events to address women’s issues, encouraging them with the word of God. Additionally, they collaborate with the police to provide spiritual support during campaign days.

The heart of Makaota Ladies Association is its commitment to unite women in prayer for the peace and prosperity of Mafeteng. Recognising that true empowerment goes beyond prayer, the group creates income-generating initiatives for its members and the wider community. By providing livelihood opportunities, they aim to enhance the economic well-being of those in need, offering a path to self-sufficiency and dignity.

They also distribute stationery and hygiene packs to certain schools on back-to-school days, ensuring that children have the essentials they need for a successful education.

“Food packages we did them out of our pockets at Ha-Raliemere,” she said.

In addition, they also insipired the Birth of Liphakoe Ladies. “To us other women from other districts are inspired by what we are doing and want the same change for their district. Also, it is our vision to see all these districts have women address issues specific to their communities.”

She further stressed that they have partnered with several women-led organisations, including Boiketlo Ba Basali, LEWID, and Women Achievers Africa to name a few, who are at the forefront of addressing the challenges faced by women.

“We are committed to fostering lasting and impactful collaborations with those we share a common passion for making a significant difference in the lives of women.”

Another one of their greatest achievement which they believe was an answered prayer was the 200 years prayer held by the nation for Mafeteng and was led by the Queen herself.

To commemorate International Women’s Day and officially launch Makaota Ladies to the wider community, the group is planning a Gala Lunch on March 8, 2025. The event, held at the Mafeteng Community Hall starting at 10:00 AM, will celebrate the strength and resilience of women.

Mathabo reflects on the significance of the upcoming event: “The Gala Lunch is not just about celebrating women, it is about honouring the work we have done and inspiring others to join us in this course. Our goal is to spread love, hope, and unity while raising awareness for the needs of our community.”

The launch of Makaota Ladies marks the beginning of a new era for the women of Mafeteng. It stands as a powerful testament to the strength of women coming together to transform their world. Through prayer, action, and unwavering commitment, Makaota Ladies is proving that even in the darkest times, there is always hope.

Mathabo concludes with a call to action: “We urge all women in all districts to come together and fight against crime and the issues in their communities, which seems to have taken over our communities. Join us at the Gala Lunch on March 8th, 2025, and be part of the movement to restore hope, peace, and prosperity to Mafeteng and beyond.”
