When it comes to the world of mixology, Lemohang “Lemstar” Bolofo’s passion is profound. His journey into the craft of cocktail creation is not just about shaking up drinks, it is about pushing the boundaries of creativity, experimenting with new flavors, and taking risks.

“I have always been someone open to new experiences,” Lemohang shares. “After working in the hospitality industry for over a decade, I wanted to explore a creative avenue that allowed me to grow and develop my skills in a more artistic way. Mixology was the perfect fit.”

In 2019, Lemohang’s skill was put to the test when he won a competition hosted by House of Linford Vodka and Limomonane Jams at the American Corner. It was a turning point in his career, sparking a deep, serious passion for cocktails that he has not looked back from since.

Drawing inspiration from global icons like South African mixologist Misology and local brands like Artisan, Lemohang believes that learning from those who have come before is key. “There is so much to learn from the greats, but the beauty of this industry is that every mixologist has the opportunity to make their own mark. So, dare to be different.”

One notable factor in Lemohang’s career has been the involvement of the US Embassy. Their support, especially through competitions, has played an instrumental role in highlighting the talent and creativity of local mixologists. “The embassy’s efforts to recognise and nurture talent in our industry are invaluable,” he explains. “Without their backing, many of us might not have had the opportunity to be seen on such a prominent stage.”

Lemohang’s collaboration with local distilleries, such as Senate Gin, has been another key milestone in his journey. “Having the freedom to experiment with unique gins and come up with original cocktail concepts has kept me motivated. The challenge of standing out in such a competitive market makes every creative moment feel monumental,” he adds.

Among his many cocktail creations, one stands out as particularly meaningful. During a competition at Café What, Lemohang crafted the “Memories Live Cocktail.” The drink was not just a mix of ingredients but a symbol of the shared experiences with everyone at the event. “For me, cocktails are about more than just taste, they are about creating lasting memories with people. Every moment I share with others in this journey is one that I’ll cherish forever.”

For Lemohang, working with local brands and ingredients is more than just a professional choice, it is a personal mission. “As mixologists, we need to be risk-takers, always experimenting with what works best and knowing when to take chances. Working with local brands allows us to support our community while also showing the world what we are capable of,” he says.

As someone who has been through the grind, Lemohang’s advice to aspiring mixologists is simple yet powerful: “Take risks. Don’t be afraid to experiment with anything and everything. Mixology is about creativity and exploration the more you push your boundaries, the more extraordinary your creations will be. Also, always stay curious and open to new ingredients, new brands, and new trends.”

Looking ahead, Lemohang is clear about where he wants to go. “In five years, I see myself continuing to improve my craft, but on a much larger scale. My goal is to expand my personal brand, work with top-tier restaurants, and keep pushing the envelope in cocktail creation. My ambition is to continue creating innovative experiences that customers can remember and savour.”

With his eyes set on bigger and bolder opportunities, Lemohang is just getting started. “The journey is only beginning. Every small win is building towards something bigger. I want to continue carving out my own path, whether it is through competitions, collaborations, or opening my own venue.”

For Lemohang, mixology is a lifelong journey of learning, experimenting, and most importantly, sharing experiences. As he continues to push the limits of cocktail creation, one thing is certain the world of mixology is lucky to have him shaking things up.
