Meet Theko Kalake, a visionary and multi-award-winning founder of Mabalane Farm, a dynamic agricultural enterprise based in Mafeteng, Makhopetsane. Since its inception in 2015, Mabalane Farm has been at the forefront of sustainable farming, specialising in both livestock and crop cultivation.
With a strong commitment to producing premium quality produce and championing ethical farming practices, Kalake has transformed the farm into a thriving hub of innovation and excellence in the agricultural sector.
The farm not only supplies the local market with fresh, wholesome products but also offers a range of services, including a butchery that sells a variety of meats such as mutton and beef. Additionally, Mabalane Farm supports the local agricultural community by providing farm equipment to local farmers, contributing to the growth and sustainability of the region’s agricultural sector.
For Theko, farming is not just a business it is a passion that has been with him since childhood. Growing up around animals, he naturally developed a love for farming, and over time, he realized that he could turn this passion into a thriving business. Inspired by his early experiences with animals and the desire to contribute to the agricultural community, Theko established Mabalane Farm to provide not only quality farm products but also innovative services that support local farmers.
The journey to success was not without its challenges. One of the most significant hurdles Theko faced when starting Mabalane Farm was the unpredictability of climate change. As a farmer, dealing with the harsh weather conditions and their impact on crops and animals, particularly pigs, was a constant struggle.
“Pigs are sensitive to heat due to their lack of sweat glands, which made it particularly challenging during hot weather.” Theko explains that in these conditions, he had to ensure the pigs were consistently cooled down by pouring water on them to keep them comfortable.
In addition to climate change, Theko also faced difficulties with the cost of supplies. The high prices of necessary materials for both crop and pig farming put additional strain on the business, along with the challenge of attracting enough customers to sustain the farm’s growth.
Despite these obstacles, Theko remained determined and focused on maintaining the highest quality of products to meet market demand, while ensuring compliance with Ministry of Health standards.
Mabalane Farm is not just about providing high-quality animal and crop products. Theko has also found ways to innovate and make the farm more sustainable. One of the methods he uses is recycling pig waste by drying it and turning it into valuable manure for his crops. This not only reduces waste but also improves the quality of the farm’s produce, showcasing Theko’s commitment to sustainable farming practices.
With two employees on board, Theko is focused on expanding the farm’s reach while maintaining its strong commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. He has big plans for the future, including the cultivation of crops specifically designed to feed his livestock, which will help cut down on feed costs and increase profitability.
Theko’s commitment to his local community is also evident through his partnership with the Finite Lifestyle Club. As a member of the club, Mabalane Farm offers a 15% discount to members, making it easier for locals to access high-quality meat and farm products at a reduced price.
Looking forward, Theko plans to further expand Mabalane Farm’s operations, introduce new farming techniques, and strengthen relationships with customers and suppliers alike. His dedication to innovation, quality, and sustainability positions Mabalane Farm for continued success in the years to come.
Whether it is through sustainable practices, high-quality products, or community engagement, Mabalane Farm is setting a new standard for farming in Mafeteng, Makhopetsane, and beyond.
