Maseru-Thomello Matsasa, a 24-year-old self-taught software developer from Lesotho, is making waves in the global tech scene. His journey as a freelancer on Upwork has not only opened doors for himself but has also paved the way for other Basotho to tap into the lucrative world of remote work.
Matsasa is not only a skilled freelancer but also a successful tech-preneur. With over a decade of coding experience, he’s founded startups in Lesotho and secured freelance gigs in over 15 countries, particularly in the US.
“My passion for technology started early. I was always curious about how things worked. I learned to code through online resources and lots of practice. It took dedication and perseverance, but I eventually mastered many programming languages and frameworks.” Matsasa
Matsasa’s vision extends beyond individual success. He aims to create a thriving tech ecosystem in Lesotho, where innovation and creativity flourish. By advocating for policies that support digital entrepreneurship and promoting digital literacy, he is working to position Lesotho as a global tech hub.
One of Matsasa’s greatest inventions was the online platform he launched in 2020 to help students learn together. This was especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic when schools closed. Many students couldn’t use other online tools, but Thusanang was easy to use and affordable. It helped students connect, learn, and support each other, even when they were apart.
After creating Thusanang, Matsasa started his own business, Outsource Consultancy. This company helps manage his freelance work, making it easier to take on new projects and deliver high-quality results.
“As my freelancing projects grew, I realized the need for a more efficient way to manage them. I wanted to streamline my processes, improve client communication, and ensure timely delivery. That’s when I decided to start Outsource Consultancy. It was a natural step to formalize my freelancing operations and provide a more professional service to my clients.” Matsasa
In 2021, Matsasa ventured onto Upwork, a platform that connects freelancers with clients worldwide. Initially, he faced challenges as a newcomer, but his determination and talent soon paid off. He secured his first freelance gig and gradually built a strong reputation within the platform’s community.
“When I first started freelancing on Upwork, it was a steep learning curve. The biggest challenge was breaking into the market and getting clients to trust a newcomer, especially from a less-known country like Lesotho. I had to work tirelessly to build a strong portfolio, write compelling proposals, and constantly adapt to the platform’s ever-changing dynamics. It was a long and often frustrating journey, but I persevered and eventually found my footing.”
Matsasa asserts that freelancing provides a uniquely flexible and independent work style, allowing individuals to handpick their projects and set their own work hours. Which not only fosters a superior work-life balance but is also particularly advantageous for those managing family commitments or pursuing personal passions.
Furthermore, freelancers have the opportunity to boost their income by juggling multiple projects and setting their rates. Engaging in a variety of projects enables freelancers to continually acquire new skills and amass valuable experience, positioning themselves as versatile and sought-after professionals.
“Freelancing is way better than a full-time Job.” Matsasa
