-As the world continues to progress and evolve, the protection and promotion of human rights remains a fundamental issue. Every year, on December 10th, we observe Human Rights Day to commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. This day serves as a reminder of the importance of human rights and the need to uphold and defend them for all individuals, regardless of race, religion, gender, or social status.

Minister of Law and Justice, Mr. Richard Ramoeletsi, will preside over the observance of International Human Rights Day, scheduled to take place at the Manthabiseng Convention Centre on December 10.

Mrs. Malesaoana Mohale, the Communication Officer for the Ministry, stated that the primary aim of this celebration is to raise awareness among marginalized citizens regarding human rights issues.

She further elaborates that specific goals include fostering a culture of respect for human rights within the community by offering human rights education tailored for, with, and by the youth. This approach is intended to ensure their active participation as key contributors to the promotion of respect, justice, and solidarity within their communities.

As we reflect on this past year, it is crucial to recognize the progress made in the fight for human rights, but also to acknowledge the challenges that still lie ahead.

Human rights are an essential part of our society and are based on the principles of equality, dignity, and freedom. They encompass basic rights and freedoms that every human being is entitled to, such as the right to life, freedom of speech and religion, and the right to education and healthcare. These rights are not a privilege but a fundamental aspect of being human. Therefore, it is crucial to protect and promote them to ensure a just and fair society for all.

On Human Rights Day, we honor the advocates and activists who have dedicated their lives to promoting and defending human rights globally. Their tireless efforts have brought about significant changes and improvements in the lives of countless individuals. Through their work, we continue to see progress in the fight for gender equality, the eradication of discrimination, and the protection of marginalized communities.

However, despite these efforts, human rights violations continue to occur every day, all around the world. In some countries, individuals are denied their basic rights, such as the right to vote, while in others, hate crimes and discrimination against minority groups are still prevalent. On this day, we must remember that the fight for human rights is not over, and we must continue to educate ourselves and take action to address these issues.

One of the most pressing human rights issues today is the ongoing global refugee crisis. According to the UNHCR, there are currently over 80 million forcibly displaced people worldwide, including refugees, asylum seekers, and internally displaced persons. This staggering number highlights the urgent need for governments and individuals to work together to provide a safe and welcoming environment for those fleeing persecution and conflict.

Another pressing issue that has gained significant attention this year is the Black Lives Matter movement. This movement has brought to light the systemic racism and discrimination that continues to plague our society. It serves as a reminder that we must stand up for the rights of marginalized communities and strive towards a more inclusive and equal society.

As we celebrate Human Rights Day, let us also reflect on our role in promoting and defending human rights. We must acknowledge that human rights are not just an issue for governments and organizations to address; it is a responsibility that falls on each and every one of us. It is our duty to be aware of our rights and the rights of others, and to speak up against injustices and discrimination in our daily lives.

On this day, we must also recognize the power of education in promoting and protecting human rights. By educating ourselves and others about human rights, we can create a more informed and compassionate society. We can also take action by supporting organizations and initiatives that work towards promoting and defending human rights globally.

Human Rights Day serves as a reminder that the fight for human rights is ongoing, and we must all do our part to ensure equality, dignity, and freedom for all. Let us use this day as an opportunity to educate ourselves, take action, and advocate for a world where everyone’s human rights are respected and upheld. Let us “Recover Better – Stand Up for Human Rights”. Because, at the end of the day, human rights are not just a cause, but a shared responsibility for all of us.
