Maseru – Street vendors are a vital part of Lesotho’s informal economy, offering goods and services to communities across the country. Yet, they often operate under challenging conditions, battling harsh weather and long hours. Sentebale GAP Funeral Servives has taken a significant step toward improving the lives of these vendors through its innovative umbrella initiative, spearheaded by the Head of Sales, Ts’epo Leboto.

In an exclusive interview with Informative Newspaper, Leboto shed light on the inspiration and execution behind this program, which has positively impacted over 300 street vendors so far.

The initiative to provide branded umbrellas to street vendors stems from Sentebale GAP Funeral Servives’ dedication to fostering sustainable livelihoods. “Street vendors form the backbone of our economy,” Leboto explains. “Our goal is to support local communities in meaningful ways. These umbrellas not only offer practical assistance by shielding vendors from harsh weather but also symbolize our company’s values of community, support, and innovation.”

This idea was born during community outreach programs, where Sentebale observed the daily struggles of street vendors operating in open spaces. Realizing that something as simple as an umbrella could make a profound difference, the company decided to act.

The umbrellas have brought numerous benefits to street vendors, including prolonged working periods without worrying about extreme sun or sudden rain, increasing their earning potential.

By reducing exposure to heat and rain, vendors face fewer weather-related health risks such as heat strokes or dehydration, enabling them to work more effectively.

Perishable items like fruits and vegetables remain fresher under the shade, improving their appeal to customers.

The branded umbrellas add a polished look to vendor stalls, building trust and credibility with customers.

Moreover, the initiative has had a ripple effect on the broader community. Vendors’ improved incomes allow them to better support their families, reinvest in their businesses, and contribute to the local economy.

Despite its success, the initiative has not been without challenges. “Expanding to multiple districts while maintaining quality and consistency has been a logistical hurdle,” Leboto admits. “Additionally, ensuring the initiative is perceived as a genuine community support, rather than a publicity stunt, has required careful communication.”

To address these challenges, Sentebale has concentrated on areas where vendors are most exposed to harsh weather conditions, such as open markets and streets without adequate shelter. The company also collaborates with local organizations that maintain detailed records of street vendors, ensuring effective distribution.

Leboto emphasizes that this initiative goes beyond providing umbrellas stating that it is about empowering the informal economy. “Street vendors play a crucial role in job creation and economic activity. By supporting them, we’re encouraging entrepreneurship and showing that the informal sector is valued and integral to Lesotho’s growth.”

By associating with a reputable company, vendors enhance their trustworthiness and credibility in the eyes of their customers.

Currently, the initiative is focused on districts where the need for shade is most urgent, particularly as roadside shacks are being removed. However, Sentebale aims to eventually reach every district in the country. “Our immediate goal is to meet the critical need for shade, but we envision a broader impact that supports vendors in various ways,” says Leboto.

As the initiative continues to expand, Sentebale remains committed to its core mission of community support. Leboto concludes with a heartfelt message to street vendors, “We appreciate the invaluable role you play in supporting your communities and driving the local economy. This is our way of saying thank you for your hard work and contribution to building stronger and thriving neighborhoods. We aim to make your workdays a little easier by providing protection from the weather and enhancing your business spaces.”

Sentebale GAP Funeral Servives’ umbrella initiative is a testament to the power of small, thoughtful actions in creating meaningful change. By addressing the practical needs of street vendors, Sentebale is not only enhancing livelihoods but also fostering economic resilience and community growth.
