Maseru – Econet Telecom Lesotho (ETL) concluded the 2024 Econet Expo with a dinner, bringing together influential leaders, partners, and main stakeholders within Lesotho’s digital economy.

The Expo, hosted under the theme “Driving the Digital Economy,” spanned several days, featuring exhibitions, product launches, and panel discussions. It also reflected shared commitment of government representatives, business executives, entrepreneurs, and ETL partners [U1] to harness technology for Lesotho’s sustainable economic growth.

The event marked the grand finale of a dynamic series of engagements fostering innovation, collaboration, and digital transformation across multiple sectors.It was a forum for reflection and networking, where attendees[U2]  explored the impact of technological innovation on Lesotho’s economic landscape. Government officials, corporate leaders, and tech innovators [U3] discussed pivotal topics such as the importance of expanding digital infrastructure, the power of public-private partnerships, and the potential of emerging technologies in critical sectors like education, healthcare, and finance.[U4] 

ETL’s role in supporting broadband expansion, local businesses, and digital literacy initiatives was central to the conversations. Attendees underscored the importance of aligning efforts between the public and private sectors to foster a digitally inclusive society.

In his remarks on behalf of InfoTech, Mr. Phumelele Msizi emphasized the significance of the partnership with ETL in empowering youth and marginalized communities. “Our commitment goes beyond business, we want to ensure that people across Lesotho, including those in underserved areas, have access to communication and technology.

Together, we are driving change that will leave a lasting impact in the lives of Basotho,” said Msizi.

The Expo was also a platform to showcase ETL’s innovations and provide local entrepreneurs with the opportunity to exhibit their products and services. This reinforces ETL’s ongoing support for small businesses and the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Lesotho.

Highlights of the Expo included:

Smart solutions for homes and businesses: Participants explored automation and connectivity tools designed to enhance efficiency in both personal and professional spaces.

Mobile financial services through Ecocash: ETL launched new fintech products, expanding its footprint in digital payments and financial inclusion.

Youth empowerment initiatives: Programs focusing on entrepreneurship and digital skills development were showcased, aimed at equipping young Basotho for the evolving job market.

Throughout the Expo, visitors gained insights into ETL’s strategic focus on broadband expansion, e-commerce solutions, and the adoption of digital tools in essential sectors. Entrepreneurs praised the event for opening new avenues for partnerships and collaborations.

In his closing remarks, ETL Chief Executive Officer Mr. Dennis Plattjies expressed gratitude to all stakeholders, exhibitors, and partners for their contributions to the Expo’s success. He highlighted ETL’s significant investments over the past year to drive innovation across the country.

“This event is not just about technology, it’s about fostering a culture of collaboration that will propel Lesotho into a prosperous digital future. We are committed to empowering schools with digital innovations, ensuring that education is part of the digital transformation journey,” said Plattjies.

Plattjies emphasized that the 2024 Econet Expo is just the beginning. “Innovation thrives in collaborative environments. This Expo demonstrates what we can achieve when government, businesses, and the people of Lesotho work together. We look forward to next year’s Expo, which promises to be even bigger and better.”

As ETL looks ahead, the company reaffirms its dedication to expanding digital infrastructure and ensuring deep connectivity in underserved areas. Plans are underway to develop e-commerce solutions and advance digital financial services to promote financial inclusion among Basotho.

The event also addressed growing concerns around cybersecurity, with Lesotho Communications Authority (LCA) CEO Mr. Nizam Goolam advising participants on the need for vigilance. “As we digitize and bring on-board more people into the digital world, we must be aware of the increasing risks. Cybersecurity must remain a priority,” cautioned Goolam.

Attendees left with the message that transformative growth can only be achieved through sustained collaboration, with ETL at the forefront of this journey toward digital excellence.

With the 2024 ETL Expo now successfully concluded, ETL is determined to maintain the momentum and continue empowering individuals, businesses, and communities through cutting-edge digital solutions.
