It was a triumphant day for Lesotho’s Tebello Ramakongoana and Neheng Khatala as they left their mark on the Hollywoodbets 10km race, claiming first place in their respective categories.

The athletes put forth a stellar performance, using their grit and determination to cross the finish line ahead of the competition. Their victories not only showcased their impressive athletic prowess but also highlighted the growing prominence of Lesotho’s athletes on the global stage, igniting a sense of pride among the nation’s citizens.

Prior to the race, discussions centered around the possibility of breaking national records set by Precious Mashele (27:35) for men and Glenrose Xaba (31:12) for women on a notably fast course in Durban; however, strong winds proved to be a significant obstacle.

As the city of Durban buzzed with excitement in the lead-up to the Hollywoodbets 10km race, anticipation and speculation mounted. Many believed that this race could be the perfect stage for records to be shattered.

However, as fate would have it, Mother Nature had other plans. Strong winds proved to be a formidable obstacle, impeding the potential for new records to be set. Yet, despite this setback, the spirit of competition remained undaunted, with Lesotho’s athletes demonstrating remarkable fortitude to overcome the challenges and seize victory.

The athletes faced challenging wind conditions on Sunday morning, which many attributed to their inability to achieve faster times, with Ramakongoana finishing in 28:07 and Khatala in 32:26.

“I am delighted to have won this race in Durban, as I came here to assess my performance following intense competition at the Olympics,” stated Ramakongoana, who was closely followed by South Africans Elroy Gelant (28:07) and Kamohelo Mofolo (28:09), who finished second and third, respectively.

“The competition was fierce, but with proper preparation, everything aligns. An athlete like Gelant is exceptional; in fact, he is faster than I am, and I hold great respect for him due to his experience,” he elaborated, also detailing his strategy for the race.

“I opted to increase my pace after six kilometers to establish a lead with one kilometer remaining, where sprinting could be advantageous.”

Ramakongoana reflected on a successful year, noting his seventh-place finish at the Paris Olympic Games.

“It has been a remarkable year, and I aspire to maintain this level of performance in the coming year.”

Khatala, who finished ahead of South African Cacisile Sosibo (32:48) and compatriot Blandina Makatisi (33:07), disclosed that her preparation was hindered by illness the previous week. The picturesque city of Durban played host to a thrilling race recently, with Lesotho’s finest athletes blazing a trail of triumph at the Hollywoodbets 10km.
