MASERU – Lesotho takes a bold step forward in launching the GivingTuesday Lesotho. With its ambitious goal of fostering a culture of generosity and kindness, the Non Profit Company made waves across the country. It registered on 30th August 2024, attracting the support of a diverse coalition of partners.
From grassroots community groups to corporate sponsors, this initiative brought together people from all walks of life, united in their commitment to creating a brighter future for their fellow citizens. The launch marks the beginning of a movement, a movement that would harness the power of giving to change the lives of countless people in Lesotho and beyond.
It was established in 2012 in the United States of America. Through this movement, they come together to extend a helping hand to those in need, transforming the humble act of giving into a powerful force for change. With a simple message, “give something on Tuesday or any day except Tuesday,” Tuesday Giving Organization ignites a fire of kindness and compassion that illuminates the hearts of givers and receivers alike.
At the core of GivingTuesday’s mission lies a bold elimination of passivity and apathy, a call to arms for citizens to step outside the confines of their daily routines and embrace a deeper connection with their communities. This movement represents more than just a day of charity; it is a conscious decision to prioritize kindness, understanding, and empathy over indifference and detachment.
A simple act of generosity becomes a symbol of resistance against the status quo, a celebration of the transformative power of human kindness and the enduring strength of community.
Country Director Mrs. Limpho Moteuli Ndleleni, conveys the NGO’s intention to reignite the spirit of generosity in people, particularly after the traditionally consumption-focused periods of Thanksgiving and Black Friday.
They see that after these celebrations, people often have more than they need—resources that could be better utilized by those in need. The aim is to inspire people to shift their focus from excess to empathy, recognizing the humanity in giving back to their communities and the joy that comes with extending a helping hand.
Ndeleleni echoes a timeless truth, highlighting the power of the simplest gestures to leave a profound impact on the lives of those around those in need.
“Even a smile can change someone’s day, lifting the spirits of those who might be struggling,” she continues. “And for those with more time or resources, visiting hospitals, retirement homes, or local shelters can bring comfort and companionship to those in need of human connection.
With its doors wide open to all, GivingTuesday offers a platform for people of all backgrounds, and abilities to participate in the beautiful act of giving. All you need is a willing heart and a willingness to share your time, resources, or a simple gesture of love with those around you.
Further expounding on the mission, the Chief Operation Officer (COO) Mrs. Matumelo Monoko emphasizes their commitment to reconnecting people with their roots, particularly in light of the 200 Years of Basotho celebration.
As they commemorate this historic milestone, they encourage Basotho to embrace their heritage and cultural traditions, recognizing the importance of these traditions in defining. Through the work, by aiming to create opportunities for Basotho to share their gifts with one another, fostering a sense of unity and pride in our shared history and culture.
It is also a hope that through this movement, will provide youth with a positive outlet for their energy and creativity. By engaging them in community service and cultural activities that can redirect their focus from the streets and provide them with a sense of purpose and belonging.
Rev. Conel Conel Nkebe, a staunch supporter of the GivingTuesday, powerfully captured the spirit of the movement with a powerful statement: “Giving is Caring.”
In a world that often prioritizes individualism and material gain, Rev. Nkebe’s words serve as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of empathy and selflessness. When we give, whether it be our time, our resources, or our attention, we open ourselves up to a world of possibilities.
He further expounded on the value of a smile as a catalyst for change, saying, “A smile costs nothing, but its value is priceless. When we smile at someone, we acknowledge their humanity, their presence, and their potential for joy. In a single moment, a smile can break down barriers, heal wounds, and inspire hope. It is a powerful tool in our toolbox of kindness, a simple act with a profound impact.”
A sense of hope and purpose filled the air through the GivingTuesday. Through the simple act of giving, each one of us can make a meaningful difference in the world. The organization calls upon us all to take part in this radical movement of generosity, to reignite our compassion for others, and to celebrate the collective power of humanity.
