Adhering to the Ministry of Education and Training’s call for organizations to participate in the back to school initiative and ensuring effective learning for students, Econet Telecom Lesotho continued to live up to its pledge of  community development and education.

The telecommunications giant handed a generous donation of school uniforms, shoes, and socks worth M25, 000 to Thuathe Primary School learners at an event held on Monday, 29th January, 2024.  This initiative aimed to alleviate financial burdens on families and ensure that every child has access to quality education in a conducive learning environment.

Opening the event, Mr Morena Sebona enlightened that the theme of the day was based on the scripture: “Therefore I give you a new commandment, that you may love one another as I have loved you. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” -John 13:34-35. He declared ETL’s act of giving was a true portrayal of love and further commended them for having remembered the needy students so that they learn without worry about their look. Lack often makes one feel like an outcast and that they do not matter in the society.

In recognition of the crucial role education plays in shaping future leaders, Econet Telecom Lesotho embarked on a mission to support underprivileged communities and promote equal opportunities for all children. With this ethos at heart, the company’s employees, dressed in their graduation regalia, visited Thuathe Primary school to donate school uniforms, shoes, and socks to 67 students in support of the Ministry of Education’s call for institutions to contribute to this year’s back to school day initiative.

“It is within our DNA and culture as Econet Telecom Lesotho to support those that are in dire need during this important time of the year and we are ecstatic that we are once again able to make this positive impact on the lives of the young students at Thuathe Primary School,” said Econet Telecom Lesotho’s General Manager – Marketing and Customer Experience Mrs. ‘Mapusetso Ntšekhe.

Ntšekhe said they chose to wear their graduations attire as motivation to young leaners. “We need you to work hard and further your studies beyond primary and secondary school so that you can also graduate and wear these type of uniforms” added Ntšekhe

Econet Telecom Lesotho through its social investment arm, Higherlife Foundation Lesotho (HLF), has been investing in human capital thus impacting the lives of Basotho for over 13 years to build thriving individuals, communities, and sustainable livelihoods.   The Foundation’s focus has been on the following four key pillars: Education Support, Leadership and Lifelong Development, Institutions (Children’s Homes), and Additional Opportunities for Higherlife Foundation Fellows.

“By addressing the basic needs of the students, Econet Telecom Lesotho strives to foster an environment where children can thrive academically and socially without the worry of lacking essential resources,” added Mrs. Ntšekhe.

Mrs. Ntšekhe further indicated that every child deserves access to quality education and the tools necessary to excel in their studies. She remarked that through this donation, ETL hopes to empower students, alleviate financial burdens on families, and contribute to the holistic development of the community.

The Principal of Thuathe Primary School, Mrs. ‘Matšela Moselane expressed her gratitude for the donation, stating, “We are immensely thankful to Econet for their generous contribution, which will undoubtedly make a significant difference in the lives of our students. This support ensures that our students can focus on their studies without the added stress of lacking essential school supplies.”

Through initiatives like these, Econet Telecom Lesotho remains steadfast in its mission to enrich lives, build stronger and more vibrant communities. The company looks forward to continued collaboration with local partners and stakeholders to create lasting change and drive progress in education and beyond.
