Maseru - Lesotho Basketball Association (LBA) will on Saturday, April 22 2017 host the annual women basketball tournament at Lehakoe Recreational and Cultural Centre courts and the tournament is normally held to celebrate International Women’s Day.

The women’s day is annually celebrated on the 8th March and the LBA director of Women in Sports ‘Malehloa Thulo said they could not hold the tournament on that day due to unavoidable circumstances and were forced to move it to this month.

The tournament consists of high school female clubs and national league female teams but some LBA retired female players would be welcome if they form complete teams, he said.

“We have 10 women teams participating in the national league and 32 in the high school league but they are not the only basketball female teams we have in the country so we are expecting more than that,” said Thulo.

According to Thulo the tournament is also aimed at empowering women in sport to close the gender based gap in sports. She said they want to create awareness that women can still be independent from men and their voices must be heard.

Apart from that, she said, the association gets opportunity to select and identify talent to represent the country in international female tournaments out of the tournament.

Last year the Bokamoso Women Basketball Club was crowned the champion in the category clubs playing in the league while the category of high school female clubs Methodist High School were the champions.

Thulo added that they do not empower women only in basketball but they want the sport to transform people’s lives. He said other than the tournaments they usually organize women’s camps where they invite women holding significant positions in the country equip the young growing women through life skills.

She also added that this year in August they are planning to pay a visit to some villages in the outskirts of Maseru to supply needy girls with sanitary pads.
