Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation (LTDC) this year was the host of the annual inter-tourism games that are rotationally held between four Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries’ tourism departments and organisations during Easter holidays.
The games, held between tourism departments from Lesotho, Botswana, Swaziland and North West province of South Africa were hosted on Saturday at Machabeng Stadium and the National University of Lesotho.
LTDC public relations officer Molapo Matela told this paper that the reason behind these games is to enhance the friendship between the SADC countries through sports and to promote the countries’ tourist destinations. The games started in Lesotho in 2014 and this was the fourth edition.
The games consisted of soccer, volleyball and netball. The soccer games saw Botswana Tourism Organization soccer team defending their championship title that they obtained last year when the games were held in North West province, SA.
Botswana managed to defend their title after humiliating LTDC soccer team with painful 2-0 in the first semi-final. LTDC were awarded a penalty but they failed to use it profitably to obtain a consolation goal against Botswana.
In the second semi final North-West beat Swaziland 2-0 and that forced Lesotho to face Swaziland in the losers final in which Lesotho won 4-2 in a penalty shoot out after playing to goalless draw, Lesotho then got position three as it left fourth spot for Swaziland.
North-West locked horns with Botswana in the final and North-West succumbed to a painful 1-0 defeat. Botswana was the crowned the champions.
Talking to Informative Sports the Botswana coach, Dickson Wiya, said they were happy that they successfully achieved what they come to Lesotho for. He said after defeating Lesotho in semi-finals they were relieved as it was their only threat.
Wiya added that the games are becoming more competitive as he said now the winning teams are not winning with high margins. He also gave praise to North West as he said they didn’t game them chance to outclass them.
Botswana brought only a soccer team to the games due to financial problems and Wiya said that they happy to have their organization happy under such circumstances and he thanked the great hospitality shown by Basotho.
The LTDC FC coach, Tšepang Pajero, said they failed to win at their home grounds due to bad communication shown by his players but he said they did not have enough time to prepare for the games.
Pajero quickly disclosed that his boys were rush in making decisions during their match and that he said failed them to relax their game and this forced them to lose a lot of chances.
