Maseru - Federation of Dancesport Lesotho (Fedale) is now working hard to polish its selected couples that are to represent Lesotho in the coming 2017 World Open Championship to be hosted by Lesotho in August.

Dancesport is a fast-growing sport that is based on the Latin dance.

The couples were selected at a competition held at ‘Mabathoana High School recently, and the Fedale development coach, Lerato ‘Sir Nandos’ Ramanki, told Informative Sport that they only managed to finalise a

national couples team for the Juvenile and Junior categories and what is only left now is the selection for Youth and Adult categories.

The competition saw the couple of Hape Tlali and Mosili Ntho being crowned the best in the Juvenile  category, leaving position two and three to the couples; Teboho Makoala and Mats’iliso Lali; and Vuyo Mzini and Sindiswa Matheso, respectively.

In the junior champions, Ntoi Sethunya and Julia ‘Mota were honoured as the champion couple while Ts’epang Sehlabi and Delinga Hlojeng became their runners-up. The third position was secured by Mpho Mothobi and Ngoajane Masoaboli.

Apart from that, the champions in both categories went home with gold medals while the second and third were recognized with silver and bronze medals in the order given.

Ramanki also disclosed that for Fedale to send a strong team to the World Dancesport Championship they needed 10 couples in each section but they didn’t made it to that number. What they then did was to fill the gap with couples from the school competitions which was also part of the selection competition.

He said for the couples to be fit enough for championship they needed to take part in several international competitions before the games. The biggest problem, however, is that they cannot request for friendly competitions with the nearest dancesport participating country, South Africa due to the fact that in SA dancesport falls under the World Dance Sport Council (WDSC) while in Lesotho it is under the World Dance Sport Federation (WDSF).

According to him the rules and regulations between WDSC and EDSF differed.

One of the adjudicators to the selection competition, Tjama Dlamini, told Informative Sport that competition was high this year than in 2016. He said the dancers had shown marked improvement this year as compared to last year. He called for the participation of more local judges to avoid the tendency of some athletes multi-tasking between being athletes and judges.
